Talk to the hand – municipality on audit outcome

'It is not true' - municipality spokesperson.

The Randfontein Local Municipality denied any deterioration following the recent audit outcomes for local municipalities.

This after the Herald reported on Tuesday that the DA was concerned about the West Rand’s poor performance in the audit outcomes.

Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor responded to Fred Nel from the DA’s statement that the municipality audit outcomes are deteriorating in Randfontein.

Tlharipe said, “It is not true that the municipality has deteriorated on its last audit outcome. The 2012/2013 audit outcome was a Qualified audit opinion and the basis were the Cash and Cash Equivalent. The 2013/2014 audit outcome is a Qualified audit opinion and the basis were Property, Plant and Equipment. On the basis of this, it is an overstretch of the mind to conclude that the Randfontein Local Municipality has deteriorated”.

He further states, “For the past two financial audit periods we have been constant of our audit outcome opinions and we have put measures in place to improve on the forthcoming audit opinion.”

The following measures are in place to improve Audit outcomes:

– An internal structure established (Operation Clean Audit- OPCA) which weekly meets the monitor progress on all issues raised by the Auditor General.

– Monthly reconciliations are done.

He also says, “On merger, Section 26 Notice was issued by the Municipal Demarcation Board on the 15th May regarding the establishment of Category A municipality in the West Rand. The process has been allocated 21 days after the issuing of the notice to allow for public engagement input and views. The Randfontein Local Municipality therefore has keen interest on the process and are awaiting final verdict on the matter.”
