RPA and Herald knit for charity

'The hardest thing I've ever done' — Herald editor on learning to knit.

“I must say, this is a bit relaxing,” said editor of the Herald, Clinton Botha while he was knitting for charity at the Randfontein Publicity Association’s (RPA) Knit-a-thon on Wednesday.

Botha, who is man’s man took time off from the office to learn how to knit, crochet and loom with elderly women from the Mohlakeng Old Age Home, a local knitting club and seniors from Toekomsrus.

“It’s like taking candy from a baby,” he said confidently but maybe he spoke to soon as Magriet van der Hoven, a master of the craft was trying to show him knitting basics when another veteran wrapped her arms around him and began showing him what to do.

Botha managed to complete a beanie that was started by RPA member Mike van Deventer. After the beanie was completed, it was known as, “My en Mike se Mussie.”

Botha receives ‘My en Mike se mussie’ from RPA’s Marcelle Mans.

The Knit-a-thon began on 20 April and will run until 5 June. The RPA is collecting wool from the community, incomplete quilt squares to knit blankets for the needy.

“We take many things for granted. This drive is for those who are less fortunate and we get a chance to get the elderly from old age home to have an outing. They come along, knit and have something hot to drink and snacks,” Joy Hamann, publicity officer of the RPA said.
