'Petrol price to increase by 47 cents' — Department of Energy.

Motorists are in for an expensive start to the month of June as the petrol price increases at midnight.

On Friday last week the Department of Energy announced that the petrol price will increase by 47 cents per litre. The price of diesel will subsequently rise by 46 and 49 cents per litre and The price of diesel will rise by between 46 and 49 cents per litre from Wednesday 3 June, and illuminating paraffin will cost 56 cents more per litre.

Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will be costing consumers 56 cents more than they currently pay. Illuminating paraffin (wholsale price) will increase by 42 cents, and lastly, liquified petroleum gas (LPG) will increase by R1.

“The main reason for the fuel price increase is the high crude oil prices which resulted in higher prices (on average) for all the petroleum products in the international markets in May 2015 compared to April 2015.”

“The Rand appreciated against the US Dollar compared to the previous fuel price review period. The international price of Brent crude oil increased on average during the period under review compared to the previous one. The US crude stockpiles fell for a second straight week, suggesting the world’s biggest oil market is re-balancing. Furthermore, the renewed tensions in the Middle East (Iraq) which raised worries about the security of supply of crude oil,” the Department explained.
