St John celebrates its 110th

Congregation comes together in a church built back in 1904.

The St John The Divine Anglican Church recently celebrated their 110 year of existence with Bishop Steve Moreo and Reverend Cathy Lee leading the service.

Bishop Steve Moreo (Bishop of the Diocese of Johannesburg), delivered a powerful message to a fully packed congregation. With the scent

of incense in the air, the children’s laughter and the elderly church goers singing hymns, the day came together in a beautiful way.

The Lay Minister’s prayer by Marisia Hendrics was very relevant, as she prayed about recent xenophobia incidents. The oldest member of the church, Rebecca Mekoa, 92, sang with enthusiasm and appreciation.

Moreo’s love and passion for the children was apparent when he received flowers from Jo-Ann van der Watt. He sent her back to the children playing outside, with a message of thanks and love. Communion was served to everybody while Moreo and Lee blessed them.

Parish Minister Frans van den Berg told the Herald he went to a video store 20 years ago, found the church and has made it his own.

After the service everybody gathered to enjoy delicious treats. Presents were handed to Moreo. The church-goers were singing cheerfully and dancing as well.

The warmth one experiences at this congregation, established in 1904, has all the right ingredients – love, respect and faith – to live on forever.
