Police explain gun licensing in W’aria

Firearm applications office moved to W'aria police station.

The Westonaria police would like to inform residents that the firearm licensing office has moved from its previous location in Doveton Street to the Westonaria police station.

The firearm licensing office is open from Monday to Friday between 7.30am to 3.45pm and is located in room 15 inside the police station.

Warrant Officer James Patrick Tladi who is in charge of firearm licensing at the police station also gave tips on what is needed to apply for a firearm license and what is needed to renew a firearm license.

Competency certificate:

• R70 in cash

• Two colour photos

• Three reference letters (from friends, family, neighbours)

• After competency is obtained then residents can apply for a license to own a firearm

Renewing a firearm license:

• R70 in cash

• Competency certificate

• License to own a firearm

• Four colour photos

• Two testimonial letters

• Proof of residence

With regards to renewals, Tladi states that a pistol’s license is valid for five years and a rifle is valid for 10 years.

Tladi would also like to convey to the community that Bekkersdal, Simunye and Zuurbekom all have their own offices for firearm licensing and appeal to the community to use the office closest to where they reside as the respective offices only deal with gun related issues on their respective areas.

In addition to the above tips, Tladi would like to inform residents that should a firearm owner die, it should immediately be reported to their nearest police station so that the police can remove the weapon and keep it safe until the family decides what to do with it.
