Bogus cops strike again

Man taken 30km away from hijacking location.

Fake police officers yet again managed to hijack a truck, this time on the N12 in Westonaria, police said.

“This is not the first time it has happened,” Sergeant Audrey Sefara, spokesperson for the Westonaria police said.

It is alleged by a complainant that on Friday (15 May) at approximately 12pm, he was driving a white Dyna truck which belongs to a company from Fochville on the N12 in the direction of Johannesburg and turned into the Jan Blignaut road after which he was stopped by four males wearing South African Police Service (SAPS) uniforms.

“They ordered him to park on the side of the road. One of them asked him why he did not stop at the stop sign but his response was that there was no stop sign.

“He was then told to follow them as they were going to write him a ticket for failing to stop at the stop sign. He proceeded to their car which was a white Polo with no police signage. One male who was sitting on the back seat pointed him with a firearm which was brown in colour and another male took out a black cloth and covered the complainant’s face.”

Sefara explained further, “They drove off with the man and bound his hands with shoe laces. He was left in an unknown place next to a river and managed to get help from passers by who told him he was in Mofolo South in Soweto which is approximately 30km from where he was stopped by the fake police. The truck was also later found abandoned in Soweto.”

Motorists are being warned to be vigilant when travelling along the N12 fom Lenasia/Impala Road robots going towards Potchefstroom up until the Fochville four way stop.

Sefara added “This is not the first instance where there was a hijacking with the same description of four African males posing as police officers driving in a white Polo sedan was given. In other reported instances, they also use a blue light. We are appealing to the public to take full description of the vehicle and registration number of the vehicle.”

If there are any people who can assist the police in apprehending the perpetrators can contact Westonaria police on 011 278 5395 or crime stop on 08600 1011.

National Police Commissioner, Riyah Payega expressed her concern over the influx of reported incidents recently.
