Child among 15 injured in taxi collision

'Taxi swerved off the road and hit a tree' — ER24.

Fifteen people were injured including a 7-year-old boy when a taxi swerved off the road and hit a tree near the Dolomite and Onyx Road intersection in Carletonville on Wednesday afternoon.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring “When paramedics arrived on scene, they found that a large crowd had gathered around the injured who lay around the scene. A wrecked taxi sat a few metres away, the front wrapped around a tree on the sidewalk.

“On assessment, paramedics found that 15 people had sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. A 7-year-old-child was found to have sustained severe injuries to both of his legs.

“Paramedics set up a triage area and began treating the patients for their injuries. Advanced life support interventions were provided to the critically injured boy to stabilise his vital signs.

“Once stable, the young patients was airlifted to Mediclinic Sandton for urgent medical attention. The remaining patients on scene were treated and transported to Carletonville Hospital for further observations. It is believed that the taxi driver allegedly swerved out of the road, lost control, and collided with the tree.”

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
