Municipality rids town of stink

Councillors fight stink for six years and win.

The Randfontein Local Municipality repaired the sewerage pipe on the border of Wards 9 and 4.

The councillors of the wards, Peter Dick (Ward 9) and Sina Erasmus (Ward 4) thank the municipality for their assistance. The area affected is at the corner of Greenhills Avenue and Langerman Street.

According to Dick, “The sewerage pipes collapsed possibly due to being uncovered by erosion. This caused spring water and rain water to flow into the sewerage pipes. The pressure of the sewage water would lift manhole covers and the sewerage would flow into the spring, contaminating the river.

“Plot owners along the stream lost fish and cows as a result of ingesting the water. The water eventually runs through the Tweeloopies Spruit, which eventually runs into Hartbeespoort Dam. The stench also was unbearable.”

Dick had been battling to get the pipe fixed for six years. It finally was completed in January this year. He said, “We would like to thank the infrastructure department of Randfontein Local Municipality for saving this area, and Pritchard Magwanya for his assistance.”
