Sibanye Gold wins Freedom Day cup

Simbanye Gold wins with a two point lead in a local soccer tournament.

The community of Bekkersdal and teams from the greater Westonaria participated in a soccer tournament held on Freedom Day.

The matches began on the morning of Freedom Day at approximately 11am on the Bekkersdal Congo field which is a sand field.

The community of Bekkersdal gathered in all their numbers around the field and chose to watch soccer to celebrate Freedom Day.

Most of the tournament went according to plan when the weather began to threaten proceedings. Rain interrupted a portion of the tournament and teams who were not in the final opted not to play for second and third place.

When the rain stopped, players were back on the field and residents back on the side of the field.

The final was between the Sibanye Gold Kloof team and Chincha Goluva.

The final was tough as players only began scoring in the second half after sizing each other up in the first half.

Tackles were made, ball skills were showed off and goal keepers dived for the ball in the sand – there was dust everywhere.

Towards the end of the second half, Kloof scored their first goal by chance as the ball was let through on accident by Chincha Goluva’s goal keeper who saved the ball but just behind the goal line.

This discouraged the opposing team and not too long after, Kloof scored for the second time. Chincha Goluva began playing with all they had and had two shots on goal after the second Kloof goal but this was not enough to win the Freedom Day cup as the whistle blew and Kloof were crowned the kings of the Freedom Day cup.
