The Westonaria Local Municipality together with the Thembekile Mandela Foundation and the Westonaria Community Trust recently handed out an impressive 6 382 sanitary towels to needy female pupils in Kgothalang Secondary School.
The hand out of these toiletries were as a result of large numbers of female pupils who stay away from school as a result of not having sanitary towels (due to poverty) during there time of the month.
Executive Mayor, Councillor Nonkoliso Tundzi said, “Some resort to use unhealthy materials or fabrics and we cannot allow this to happen. We want to create a hospitable environment where all pupils are equal irrespective of their unfortunate backgrounds and can enjoy their learning. I hope this will being confidence to the affected pupils.”
According to Kgabane Madiehe, spokesperson for the Westonaria Executive Mayor, “This programme will run for the next five years starting from today and distribution will be done every months in each school were there is a need.”
Ndikela Mandela, the founder of the foundation indicated that the foundation is extending the hand of assistance to the affected girl pupils so that they, in turn can reach out the had of assistance to foreign nationals and other people. She warned pupils and those present not to tolerate or participate in xenophobic attacks.
Aluzuko Malele an 18-year-old beneficiary of the programme said she was glad for the programme and stated that it is a godsend for her and many of her peers.
In addition, Tshenolo Modise, another 18-year-old beneficiary from Simunye Township said that she was overwhelmed and humbled by the help from the municipality and the Thembekile Mandela Foundation.
