Eskom issue resolved?

'Eskom has reached an agreement with Randfontein and Westonaria' — West Rand District Municipality.

Mzi Khumalo, Randfontein Executive Mayor assured the community “the issue of Eskom and Randfontein has been resolved”.

The West Rand District Municipality stated on Tuesday (21 April) Randfontein and Westonaria Local Municipalities have reached an agreement with Eskom regarding the electricity being cut in June and stated there will be “no cut-off because of non-payment”.

Eskom publicly announced that 20 defaulting municipalities will be cut off as of 5 June – they stated these municipalities would be subjected to load shedding twice a day, every day.

In the latest response from the Randfontein Local Municipality, Tshidiso Tlharipe – spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor – said, “The Randfontein Local Municipality since May 2014 to date has been paying the current account on time and well, and as a result we have drawn up a repayment plan that requires the municipality to pay the current account and monthly pay off R3 million towards the arrears.

“We have submitted the repayment plan to Eskom and are awaiting their approval.”

In a recent statement from the West Rand District Municipality, spokesperson Dennis Mangope said, “Eskom has reached an agreement with Randfontein and Westonaria on servicing their debt. As a result of the arrangements to pay off the debt, these municipalities (Randfontein and Westonaria) will not have cut-offs because of non-payment.

“Consumers are encouraged to limit electricity usage as much as possible on non-critical appliances to assist Eskom in their generating challenges. Furthermore, residents must assist councils in combatting illegal connections and non-payment of municipal accounts.”
