Five dead, 50 injured as school bus and car collide

'Most of the patients were children on their way to school'.

A head-on collision involving a light motor vehicle on Welberdiend Road near Carletonville left five people dead and approximately 50 people injured on Monday.

The school has been confirmed to be Tsitsiboga Primary School by Julia Gwai, administrator at the school.

Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24 explained that when ER24 paramedics got on scene, they found both the light motor vehicle and the school bus laying on the side of the road with the light motor vehicle completely ripped open.

“On inspection, paramedics discovered the lifeless bodies of five women laying inside the light motor vehicle. Unfortunately all five had sustained fatal injuries and had already succumbed to their injuries prior to the arrival of paramedics,” Meiring said.

He continued “At least 50 other patients were found on scene with minor injuries. Most of the patients were children on their way to school. Paramedics from multiple services set up a staging area on scene and began treating the patients for their injuries.”

Meiring explains that the treated patients were then transported to nearby hospitals including Carletonville Hospital for further medial treatment.

“The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations,” Meiring concluded.
