How I hunted down the thief

'I flashed my lights for the police to tell them the guys speeding are criminals and they began to follow me.'

Earlier this week a vehicle was targeted in De Gama Street in Culemborg Park – little did the suspects know that Gerrie Pretorius would hunt them down.

Pretorius explained that he was coming out of his house with his mother and saw a green Nissan Sentra passing the house. He said he told his mother the car looked suspicious. They proceeded to leave the house as normal when they saw the Sentra parked behind a brown bakkie. He said the suspects were trying to steal the bakkie.

“They got back into the Sentra and sped away and I chased after them,” said Pretorius. According to him he chased them through various streets of Randfontein and they drove fast and recklessly.

“I chased them all the way to Mohlakeng when I saw a police van passing by. I flashed my lights for the police to tell them the guys speeding are criminals and they began to follow me. An accident ensued and the suspects got out of the car and tried to escape. Police arrested one and the other managed to escape,” Pretorius explained.

According to Zaheer Gangat, chairperson of the Randfontein CPF executive committee, “The suspects crashed into an unfortunate oncoming car (Ford).”

According to Tessa Viljoen, medic at Quick Response Services (QRS), “A towing company was busy towing the Sentra when we got on scene and I assessed the driver of the Ford and found no serious injuries – just stiffness in the right shoulder.”
