R28 — a road to fear

If the collisions don’t get you, random protests and theft will.

The R28 (Main Road) is becoming an increasingly dangerous road for motorists to drive on as carnage ensues on a weekly basis.

The latest of the collisions was one that occurred at the Uncle Harry’s intersection of which one person was seriously injured. This deadly road has claimed the lives of many during collisions; used as a means to threaten motorists during service delivery and has become a hot-spot for crime.

The herald has reported on nearly 20 accidents on the R28 alone since the beginning of the year. The accidents range from T-bone collisions to cars rolling. In addition to this, trucks crash into other trucks, cars crash into trucks, and trucks jack-knifing.

This is not particular to Randfontein as a car caught a light on the R28 running through Krugersdorp as well as Westonaria.

If this is not enough to cause concern, the R28 between Randfontein and Westonaria has been used as a means to intimidate residents during service delivery protests as people participating in these protests block the road off with rocks, burnt tyres and pelt cars with stones.

Sergeant Audrey Sefara from the Westonaria Police has also warned that the R28-N12 intersection is a hot-spot for crime as criminals stand at this intersection and target motorists who visibly have items of value in their cars.

According to Denver Ramnarian, Founder and Executive Manager of Quick Response Services (QRS), “People don’t really understand how quickly accidents can happen and they need to drive safely. They need to make sure that everyone in the car is wearing a seat-belt and that young children have car seats to sit in.”
