Catching carp is Charles’ thing

'Carp angling is not just a sport, it helps with having time for yourself and to reflect back on the environment'

Itshikeng Charles Segatlhe from Randfontein was overwhelmed when he was selected to be captain of the North West Carp Angling Club at this year’s Annual Carp Angling Championship.

The championship will be held from 10 to 15 April in Bloemhof – a town situated on the banks of the Vaal River in the North West.

Charles is a professional nurse who was born in Kagiso. He was introduced to carp angling in 2013 after going through a tough divorce.

Charles’ personal best at the Common Cup was 19,70kg and 10,3kg at the Mirror Cup Championship. He is currently the Wild Africa Carp Classic champion with a catch of 19,72kg.

In an interview with the herald, Charles said, “I am confident going to the championship because I am in a team with top dogs such as Loutjies Louwes and Gilbert Foxcroft who represented SA four times at the World Cup.

“Carp angling is not just a sport, it helps with having time for yourself and to reflect back on the environment.”

He encouraged people to have an open mind and try it out for themselves. Beside pricking yourself with a hook and the possibility of drowning if you are not cautious, injury is minimal.

Preparation for main events is having a good night’s rest and a complete Kettle box in order.
