New diamond scam uncovered

Elderly men warn about scammers – one posing as an officer, the other as a salesman.

“Don’t get caught off guard by criminals,” a man has warned after he and his friend were robbed of approximately R8 000 after being lured by a man who posed as a salesman in Evaton recently.

Their garden worker, was approached by a man who posed as a sales agent of brush cutters and told him of his special price for the equipment. After the worker spoke to his employer, the employer, 59 and his friend, 68 (who wishes to remain anonymous in fear of the criminals) contacted the sales agent and set up a place to meet.

The men arrived at this designated place which is known as Evaton and were lured into a small room with a table and four chairs.

After they sat down the salesman took out a plastic bank bag full of diamonds and told them to put the money on the table. One of the men stood up and walked out, but was blocked by a man in police uniform who introduced himself as officer Mokena.

The ‘officer’ walked to the table, picked up the diamonds and accused the men of illegal trading of diamonds. They confiscated more than R8 000 from these men before trying to arrest them. After an argument that felt like an eternity for these men, they were let go.

“It is not the money that I am worried about, but thinking back and realizing what could have happened would have been much worse than what happened,” one of the men said.

“Always be on the lookout for opportunists like these, it could be the difference between life and death,” the other warned.
