Communities urged to be the eyes and ears of police

'We humbly ask you to work with us to improve safety in our ranks'.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety conducted a road safety initiative at the Randfontein taxi rank recently and urges communities to be the eyes and ears of police.

The initiative was brought about as a result of the large amounts of residents relying on public transportation – taxis in particular.

According to Thapelo Moiloa, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety “Taxis often exercise impunity of the road by driving recklessly, using vehicles that are not roadworthy and not using designated stops.”

Mmotsi Nobela from Social Crime Prevention at the Randfontein Police explained, “As police, we are also aware of some of the prevalent crimes in taxi ranks. We know that there are people who sell dagga in and around the ranks but when we do the operation we find nothing because someone alerted the dealers.

“We humbly ask you to work with us to improve safety in our ranks. There is a need to come up with a decisive campaign to ensure our people can travel safely without the fear of being robbed.”
