Samwu speaks out after mayor resigns

'It is a breath of fresh air that fills us with hope.'

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) welcomes the resolution of the Council to elect Mzi Khumalo as the Executive Mayor and Brenda Mahuma as the new Speaker.

“It is a breath of fresh air that fills us with hope that the new leadership will ignite the understanding and promotion that every manager must promote the advancement of a harmonious labour relations environment,” said Secretariat Kgosetsile Breedt of Samwu.

Samwu endorses what the newly elected mayor said about rules for municipal staff, including those who are in political positions. Khumalo said, “The normal start time for all employees, including managers, directors and political office is 7.30am.”

Breedt said municipal workers in Randfontein are becoming a more critical workforce in delivering quality basic services and it is prudent to address the issues that Samwu has raised:

• Speedy formulation and ratification of a standing policy of leave encashment.

• Action to be taken against managers and directors who continuously fail to meet 50 per cent of their key performance indicators.

• Municipality becoming vigilant regarding lack of disclosure of financial interests by municipal officials and family members who have shares, sponsorship, benefits and immovable property with companies doing business with the municipality.

• Municipality implements recommendations of the Auditor General’s reports that reflect huge improper fruitless expenditures.

• Management respect the process of consultation especially when the municipality is faced with the huge task of the 2016 amalgamation of the West Rand Region.

• Address employee morale as indicated by the Executive Mayor especially at low level positions.

“Samwu has been and continues to be a proponent of ethical and transparent government in our overall sector-local government of South Africa. We would like to congratulate the newly elected Executive Mayor and Speaker and wish them success in meeting the many challenges that will face them in the coming period,” Breedt said.
