Exposed to illegal sexual ads

Would you want your child to call a sangoma out of curiosity?

It is both embarrassing and annoying when you stop at a traffic light with your children in the car and a huge poster promising a larger penis stares you in the face.

Perhaps you were on your way shopping with your children when you saw a “Lost Lover – hips and bums enlargement” advert on a palisade fence.

Awkwardness does not even begin to describe the moment when your child asks, “Why would you want to enlarge your bum?”

Sadly, this is a reality in Randfontein and throughout South Africa.

Children are exposed to these posters, whether on the way to school or out with their parents or friends. We live in a digital age where very young children have cellphones and could call these numbers out of curiosity. No parent would want their children to be exposed to illegal adverts with blatant sexual themes.

The herald did some research and found that these posters in fact are put up illegally; they are stuck to walls, road signs and sometimes palisade fences. It has become an eyesore in certain areas in Randfontein.

Huge illegal posters advertising secret sangoma recipes for bigger and more efficient body parts completely cover some of the stop signs.

These signs are so distracting some even may forget about it being a stop sign and drive right through the intersection, which poses serious dangers.

As it is Public Safety’s responsibility to enforce by-laws the herald has requested their comment on what is being done about the illegal and inappropriate posters.
