JMPD couldn’t care less about the disabled

‘It is time these so-called 'officers of the law' start practicing what they preach.’

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has come under the spotlight in Randgate after one of its officers used the parking reserved for people with disabilities at the Spar as his own personal VIP parking.

One would think that an officer of the law should know the laws regarding disabled parking zones better than anyone else but that did not seem to be the case on Wednesday.

Johan Roodt saw the JMPD vehicle parking in front of the Spar and decided enough was enough when the officer and his female companion appeared perfectly able-bodied when they got out of the JMPD vehicle.

“I quickly took out my phone and captured the moment for a good name-and-shame in the newspaper. It is time these so-called officers of the law start practicing what they preach,” Roodt said.

According to Roodt he found the officer inside Spar, in full uniform, seemingly without a care in the world grocery shopping with his female companion in civilian clothes. Roodt realised if a disabled person wanted to use the parking they would have had to wait at least half an hour for the officer to finish his personal shopping.

A R500 fine is issued to able-bodied people parking in parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities. After two fines disciplinary action can be taken in terms of South African law.

The question remains … who brings the police to book?
