CPF, community and police strengthen bonds

Randfontein Station Commander informs residents on how to beat crime.

Relationship ties were strengthened between the community, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Randfontein Police following a community meeting held recently.

The meeting was well attended by residents from Greenhills and beyond. An appearance was made by Randfontein Police’s Station Commander, Colonel Marius Smith who informed residents about happenings in Randfontein and how they as the community can combat crime.

Serious issues in Randfontein discussed were:

• Gate motors being stolen.

• Housebreaking.

• Vehicle theft.

• Theft out of vehicle.

• Drugs.

Col. Smith also advised residents on how to prevent being a victim of crime. He told residents to put electronic equipment in their boots when travelling rather than in the inside of their cars.

With regards to housebreakings he said, “stop leaving your lights on when you go on holiday. Nothing says you are not home like a light that burns during the day.”

Drugs in Randgate was also brought up by Col. Smith, “yes, drugs are a big issue but who are the people buying the drugs? They are people you live and work with, they are family and friends. If you see drug abuse, report it.”

In addition to the meeting being to inform community about crime in Randfontein and addressing the community’s concerns regarding the police, it was also a meeting to elect a a new CPF committee.

New CPF committee:

• Stanley Myley will serve as the CPF chairperson once more.

• CJ du Plooy.

• Natalie van der Westhuizen.

• Karin de Beer.

• Tessa Viljeon.

• Sue van der Merwe.

The roles of the new CPF have not been established as yet, says Zaheer Gangat, Chairperson of the CPF Executive Committee.
