Westcol students strike

Tests disrupted during strike at Westcol.

Westcol students on Wednesday were allegedly striking because of bursary funding not coming through student Tyron Knoetze said.

“I was supposed to write a test today but then I was told that it wasn’t happening. The students went into classes and sprayed water in them with hose pipes,” Knoetze added.

He continued, “They refused to let other students out and those who were outside in. The gates were barricaded with bins. Students had to jump over fences and break locks to get out.”

Another Westcol student, Nadine Pieterse stated “They started at around 9:45am and ended around 2pm. While they were striking, someone stole my phone.

“There was one police van here and also security company cars. The students say that they will continue the strike today (Thursday 19 March). Hopefully they don’t and I can write my test” Knoetze explained.

Salomé du Toit, Marketing and Communication Manager for Westcol said, “We are aware that a strike happened and further comment will be given as soon as possible.”

The security vehicle that stood outside Westcol College the majority of the day, said Tyron Knoetze.
