Trapped kittens rescued from drain

Westonaria SPCA and District Fire Department put heads together and save trapped kittens.

The Westonaria SPCA and West Rand District Fire Department in a joint effort managed to rescue kittens trapped in a drain at the Shoprite parking lot over the weekend (Sunday morning 15 March).

“What an exciting Sunday morning,” an overjoyed Janette Muller who is an Inspector for the Westonaria and Randfontein SPCA said.

Good Samaritan Martin Janse van Vuuren was going about shopping as he normally would when he heard kittens cry from a drain in the parking lot.

“I heard them crying and I wanted to rescue them but Shoprite has these new drains with the cement on them so you can’t just put your hand through,” Janse van Vuuren said.

Janse van Vuuren then followed his instincts and drove to the Westonaria SPCA where he was given the number of Muller. The Fire Department were also contacted by an unknown bystander.

The kittens were eventually rescued and are so small that they need to be bottle fed.

In addition to this, Muller said that the kittens already have homes for when they are older.
