EMS shift leader shot on duty

'District management condemns such acts and appeals to community members not to attack health personnel,' β€” West Rand District Health Department.

The West Rand District Health officer encountered an incident where Emergency Medical Services (EMS) shift leader was shot while on duty.

The shift leader, Bulelwa Nhlapo, was shot while on duty at Bekkersdal Township.

β€œThe incident took place on Friday, 6 March at 3am. Two men came went to the base and tried to open the locked door of the cabin where the EMS personnel was operating from,” says West Rand District Health Principal Communication Officer, Sandile Gwayi.

Gwayi continues to say, β€œthe shift leader unlocked and slightly opened the door to prevent the men from entering the cabin and asked what they wanted.”

After exchanging words about call logging and Nhlapo saying an ambulance will respond, the men tried to force the door open. One of the men allegedly fired a shot which hit Nhlapo in the knee. The men later fled the scene, according to Gawyi.

The EMS crew at the base assisted her and transported her to Leratong Hospital.

A forensic investigation team from the Police went to the scene and a case was opened.

β€œThe District management condemns such acts and appeals to community members not to attack health personnel as they are there to assist the community,” Gwayi said.
