Robber gets 17 years in prison

Another successful prosecution for Ranfontein police.

A 23-year-old male was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for an armed robbery which occurred on 2 August, 2014.

The victim of the crime was a 47-year-old male that was robbed at gunpoint in an open veld between Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng. The victim alleged that his cash and cellphone was taken.

The victim was able to give a good description of the suspect and on 9 September, 2014, a friend of the victim spotted the suspect. Santie le Roux-Laufs, the investigating officer, was contacted and went with the victim to the area the suspect was last seen in.

Le Roux-Laufs was able to arrest the suspect and it was found that the suspect was still in possession of a firearm at the time. It was confirmed by the victim that it was the same firearm used to rob him.

The case was heard at the Randfontein Regional Court where the accused was found guilty. The suspect named Motloang Leluma was subsequently sentenced to 17 years imprisonment on 23 February, 2015.

“Warrant officer Santie Le Roux-Laufs is applauded for the way in which she conducted the investigation.  Her determination and perseverance resulted in this sentence,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Spokesperson for the Randfontein Police.
