W’aria’s new Station Commander in town

'I want to see W'aria being a safe place, where the community can trust police.'

There is a new Station Commander in town so Westonaria criminals better beware as there are plans to weed them out from among the community.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, new commander of the Westonaria Police Station has been in the Service for nearly 30 years. He enlisted on 6 February 1986.

On 1 April 2012 Moonsamy became commander of the Bekkersdal Police Station when it broke away from Westonaria and became operational.

Three years later, on 13 January 2015 he became commander of the Westonaria Police Station following a Station Commander swap; the Westonaria Police Station commander was transferred to Bekkersdal and Moonsamy went over to Westonaria.

When asked what his plans were for crime in Westonaria he said, “I want to see Westonaria being a safe place, a place where the community can trust the police. I want to bring back a time where the community can phone the police and they actually respond, letting people know they care.

“The only way to achieve this is to get involved with the community. We depend on the community for information.

The Westonaria Police is looking at involving various pillars in the community such as the Sector Crime Forum, reviving the Community Policing Forum, Business Against Crime, Neighbourhood Watches and all other relevant roll players.”

Moonsamy also put forward a few tips for residents regarding the police:

“When a police officer comes out on a scene, take down his or her name in case you are not happy with the service and report it so that we know who to deal with.”

Furthermore, he urged residents to contact 011 278 53 95/6 to report a crime. If they cannot get through on these numbers, he advised them to call 086 001 0111.

Lastly, Moonsamy reminded Westonaria residents of a Sector Forum and Community Meeting on Thursday 12 March at 5pm at Westonaria Borwa.
