Boy, 11, drowns in river while playing with friend

'There was sadly nothing further that could be done for him' — paramedics.

An eleven-year-old boy has tragically lost his life during a drowning incident next to the N12 in Klerksdorp on Wednesday.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann “Paramedics were called by police search and rescue unit members after a drowning was reported to them. Upon paramedics’ arrival, they parked at a bridge and hiked approximately 2km to the scene where the little boy drowned.

“Reports from the scene indicate that two boys were playing and chasing each other when the one stepped on a log which caused him to lose his balance and he fell into the river.

“When paramedics arrived at the scene members of the police search and rescue unit had already recovered the boy’s body from the river and upon assessment they found that the boy had already passed away.

“There was sadly nothing further that could be done for the boy and he was declared dead at the scene.”
