Trapped miners rescued

All 486 miners safely brought to the surface following 12-hour rescue operation.

It has been confirmed by Harmony Gold spokesperson Marian van der Walt that hundreds of miners were trapped underground on Sunday.

According to Van der Walt, “A fire occurred at the Kusasalethu gold mine but has since been contained. Some 486 workers were working underground when a fire started on the mine’s 7 level approximately 2 300 meters below surface at around 9.40am.”

The workers trapped were supplied with oxygen, water as well as communications to the surface of the mine.

All 486 miners were safely brought to the surface following a 12 hour rescue operation. No injuries were reported.
