Don’t just move, move with life!

According to the World Health Organization approximately 1.71 billion people worldwide suffer from musculoskeletal conditions.

Musculoskeletal conditions, also called repetitive motion injuries, restrict movement and capabilities which may lead to early retirement, lower levels of well-being and reduced ability to participate in society. There are more than 150 musculoskeletal conditions which affect people, and they are the leading contributors to disability worldwide.

“Musculoskeletal conditions are typically categorised by pain which occur in the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles or tendons,” explained Dr Peter Ojwang, orthopaedic surgeon at Life Robinson Private Hospital.

“These conditions can suddenly arise. They can be short-lived, such as fractures, sprains and strains, or they can be lifelong conditions with ongoing functioning limitations and disability”.

Common causes of musculoskeletal conditions include bone fractures; joint dislocation; direct blows to muscles, bones or joints; overuse injuries; poor posture; or sprains. Symptoms vary depending on the cause of the condition, however common symptoms include:

• Aching and stiffness
• Burning sensation in the muscles
• Fatigue
• Muscle twitches
• Pain that worsen with movement
• Persistent pain
• Sleep disturbances

“Generally musculoskeletal conditions improve with the correct treatment,” added Dr Ojwang. “If an underlying condition causes musculoskeletal pain, identifying and treating it can help relieve the symptoms. If pain interferes with your daily activities or movement, it is important to seek immediate medical advice to ensure optimum recovery.”
