Electricity outage not load shedding

'Electricity to be off until further notice' — municipality.

Some parts of Randfontein especially in the CBD area are currently without electricity.

The cause of the electricity outage is not due to load shedding rather thieves who targeted a substation and stole two neutral earthing compensators.

The theft happened during the time that Eskom and municipal workers were busy tending to a line that was damaged by lightning.

When they were done repairing the line, they switched the electricity back on which triggered an explosion as a result of the missing component where the thieves stole the vital component of the substation.

The explosion, as a result, has triggered a power outage in some parts of Randfontein.

The thieves also vandalised a minisub and stripped the ripple control system.

According to Lucky Chiya, Spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor, “The electricity will be off until further notice. Our technicians are currently working around the clock to restore the electricity. We would also like to apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused but we are working on the problem.”

The areas that are affected are Robinson Hospital, Bongweni, Jameson Park to Checkers, Greenhills sports complex, the police station, Friendship Haven Old Age Home, Parts of Greenhills, Robinpark and a portion of Homelake.
