Man killed when struck by train

'He just walked onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train' — witnesses.

A 43-year-old man died when he was hit by a train between Homelake and Randfontein station recently.

Witnesses told police on Thursday (5 February) they saw the man walking onto the tracks around 2.30pm in front of an oncoming train. Documents found on the man indicates he is from Toekomsrus.

The investigating officer, Warrant officer Disco Thieane would appreciate any information that might assist him in tracing the family of the deceased. He can be contacted on 011 278 8100 for further information.

According to Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst “This incident is a sad reality of what happens when pedestrians do not adhere to warning signs and requests to keep of the railway lines.

” The Randfontein police and Metro Rail have on numerous occasions issued warnings that this is a dangerous habit for residents.

“Pedestrians are again urged to refrain from crossing the railway line at unprotected crossings and must use the crossings provided.”
