Bogus municipal workers target elderly woman

83-year-old robbed of R4 000 in cash.

An 83-year-old woman was robbed of thousands of rands in her home in Randgate over the weekend by who she alleges were fake municipal workers.

“I feel so stupid falling for it. I let them into my house. It is the worst feeling being tricked. I have been on the verge of tears since the incident,” she sobbed.

“First a white woman was at my house the day before and said that she would send people over to look at my electricity meter. The next day, two men came to my house. When they were at my door, they asked whether I was the owner, if I was alone and how old I was. It is like they were making sure that I was alone. They said that they were here to look at my meter. They said they were there to install a cheaper meter for me but I refused.”

She continued to say that she had an envelope with R4 000 in cash in it which was taken from her home by the men.

“I only realized that they stole from me after they had left. Before I realized that I had been robbed, the same woman as before called me to ask if the men were here.”

The elderly woman has since reported the case to the police and further comment is awaited from them.
