First-timer athletes give it their best shot

It was oodles of fun for educators, parents and children during RCA's first athletics meeting.

Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) held their first official athletics meeting on Friday.

RCA made use of Hoërskool Jan Viljoen’s sport grounds and the small school looked a bit lost on the massive pavilions.

The school was divided into two teams, red and blue with added cheerleaders also dressing up for the occasion. School songs were sung and cheered for their fellow team mates.

For the grade R’s and 1s, it was the first time they experienced an athletic event and educators and parents had to first teach and show them how it works before they could compete.

Some pupils showed great form in the sprints and was all met with praise by educators at the finish line.

“The meeting was held to identify pupils who show promise in athletics so that we can help train them to be the best they can be. We want to let our pupils know that they all have the potential to be winners and encourage them to try everything until they find something they excel in,” Retha Maree, RCA’s principal said.

Everyone was given the opportunity to run and all the children and parents had oodles of fun. After the track events, the children also got the opportunity to do long jump and shot put. The blue team walked away with the most wins on the day but everyone felt like they walked away a winner on the day.
