West Rand schools tops
Randfontein and Westonaria rake up the awards at grand ceremony.
There were cheers all around as the matric class of 2014 in the West Rand district achieved the highest pass rate nationally with 92,8 per cent.
Celebrating the achievement the West Rand District Municipality together with the Gauteng Department of Education (Gauteng West) hosted a grand gala awards evening at Mount Usambara in Krugersdorp rewarding the top achieving schools and pupils.
District Director, Peter Skosana, congratulated all matriculants in the district on their great accomplishments.
Mpho Nawa, Executive Mayor for the West Rand District Municipality gave a speech in which he applauded the high success rate of the West Rand during 2014 and wished all schools in the district well for the year ahead.
Randfontein and Westonaria brought home many awards from individual matriculants excelling at subjects to schools achieving monumental pass rates and awards for consistency.
Best performing pupils from town schools in Randfontein and Westonaria:
• Lourens Willem Biggs from Hoërskool Riebeekrand in third place
• Aaliah Tilly from Azaadville Muslim School in fourth place
Top Mohlakeng/Bekkersdal/Toekomsrus schools in subject category:
• Mbulelo Gwalase from Simunye Secondary School in first place
• Matthews Mashabela from TM Letlhake Secondary School in fourth place
Best performing school in Mohlakeng/Bekkersdal/Toekomsrus:
• Thuto Lehakwe Secondary School in fourth place with a 98 per cent pass rate
Overall best achiever in a subject in Randfontein and Westonaria:
• Albert van der Walt for Geography from Hoërskool Riebeeckrand with 274,75 points
• Lourens Willem Biggs for Economics from Hoërskool Riebeekrand with 281,19 points
• Aaliah Tilly for Accounting from Azaadville Muslim School with 295,74 points
• Donovan Spogter for Dramatic Arts from Randfontein High School with 285,39 points
• Juane Meyer for English FAL from Hoërskool Riebeeckrand with 273,64 points
The most improved rural school:
• Ithuteng Secondary School going up 5.3 per cent from 2013
Most improved priority schools (only Randfontein and Westonaria represented):
• Simunye Secondary School with a 21,73 per cent difference from 2013
100 per cent achieving schools from Randfontein:
• Randfontein High School
• Azaadville Muslim School
• Randview College
Schools appearing in the top 100 in the province from Randfontein:
