Bomb threat a crime — police

Punishment may include a hefty fine or even jail time.

Randfontein Police confirmed a bomb threat incident on Friday (23 January), warning that if caught, those responsible will be punished harshly.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, “Police take these matters very seriously and if perpetrators are caught making threatening calls to institutions, they can be held liable for lost hours and resources. They also can be arrested and face criminal charges that can lead to hefty fines or even jail time.

“That day Absa, Capitec and various other stores in the mall had to be evacuated after the bank received a call about a bomb. The K9 Unit was called to search the premises but did not find anything.”

The police are working with the bank, which has opened a case that will be investigated.
