Trudy’s a nest for caring

Non-profit organisation calls on larger Randfontein for donations.

Trudy’s Nest has been highly recommended by local police and has ties with some big guns in town such as the Randfontein Local Municipality.

The non-profit organisation feeds elderly people who are neglected by their communities, as well as disadvantaged families. They provide food for the elderly every Tuesday and Friday at the Toekomsrus Library. They also offer a service that delivers food to elderly people who are bedridden.

This week, the elderly received food parcels from a local business with basic groceries that can provide meals for more than just one day.

Many of the elderly who sat waiting for the food parcels looked as though they were at their wits end. The heartache in the room was almost palpable but the help received from Trudy’s Nest put a smile on the faces of the disadvantaged. The food received from Trudy’s Nest twice a week makes a difference in their lives.

Among the elderly was a little boy who could not wait for his mother to receive her parcel to prepare a wholesome dinner for him.

The organisation is run by Trudy Haywood who founded Trudy’s Nest approximately 10 years ago. Her goal is to improve the standard of living among the elderly in Toekomsrus.

In an earlier interview with Trudy she said, “With the increase of food prices and other costs, the elderly’s pensions are not enough to cover all their expenses. I am devoted to helping the underprivileged people in my community and I believe it is my calling in life.”

Last year, the organisation received a donation from local businessman Maurice Adams from All2Gether Labour. They also have gathered money from fundraisers.

While this helps the organisation, it is imperative for them to receive ongoing donations from the larger Randfontein to continue their work.
