Paperless learning comes to Gauteng

Seven Gauteng schools become the frontrunners of the future face of South African education.

The announcement to launch the Big Switch On pilot was announced and Gauteng eagerly awaited the announcement of the chosen schools.

The Big Switch On pilot project is aimed at modernising classrooms in Gauteng, turning them into classrooms of the future.

With this pupils will have access to their normal learning materials though Information Communication Technology (ICT), which is becoming a standard method of learning internationally. The project is part of Gauteng’s bid to modernise its public education system and truly make it world-class.

Seven schools in Gauteng were chosen for the pilot. Of the seven schools, four are from Tembisa and two are primary schools while the rest are high schools.

The schools below were visited by deployed MECs from the Department of Education on the first day of school in order to launch and make sure that the project started smoothly.

• Boitumelong Secondary School in Tembisa – deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, premier David Makhura, and MEC Panyaza Lesufi as the deployed MECs

• Phomolong Secondary in Tembisa – MEC Bopape as the deployed MEC

• Thandi Eleanor Sibeko Secondary in Duduza – MEC Creecy as the deployed MEC

• Tlamatlama Primary School in Tembisa – MEC Mamabolo as the deployed MEC

• Sunward Park in Boksburg – deputy speaker Uhuru Moiloa as the deployed MEC

• Ponelopele Oracle Secondary in Ivory Park – MEC Mayathula-Khoza as the deployed MEC

• Tshepisa Primary School in Tembisa – MEC Nkosi-Malobane as the deployed MEC

These schools are but the beginning of a total modernisation of the South African public education system in the years to come.
