Woman offered home but refuses

'I cannot leave this until I see this grandma living in better conditions' - Municipal Official.

An elderly woman in Pelzvale living in poor living conditions refuses to be helped by the Randfontein Local Municipality.

Municipal officials paid Meisie Molaulla a visit in order to convince her to take up a home in the Mohlakeng Old Age Home where she could live for the rest of her days without expense.

Molaulla has since refused to leave her property and said that she is happy where she lives.

After the initial visit, municipal workers returned with the health department and the owner of the manager of the Mohlakeng Old Age Home in a bid to convince her that the move is for her own good.

The woman was not at home at the time as she was taken to hospital because of a spell of illness. Molaulla is currently living on her own in a very small cottage on a large plot. She shares one section of the cottage with a shepard.

The condition of the cottage is what is described by Patricia Matuwane, MMC of Social Services at the Randfontein Local Municipality as “unacceptable to live in and a serious health risk.” She continues to say that one will end up sick if one lives there.

In addition to this, Molaulla is half blind and appears to have no family or friends. The owner of the plot next door occasionally checks up on her and brings her food.

The age of the woman is unknown as she refused to present her identification document to municipal officials.

“I cannot leave this until I see this grandma living in better conditions. Should anything happen to her, I do not want to have that on my conscience. I understand that she has rights but this is no way to live,” Matuwane said.
