St Mary’s church celebrate Reconcilliation Day

'Sport activities are the only thing that they [children] have to keep off the streets of Bekkersdal'.

St Mary’s Anglican Church in Bekkersdal hosted a fun day in the spirit of Reconciliation Day and unity on Tuesday.

Due to the unexpected rain on Reconciliation Day, the fun day was off to a late start but continued nonetheless.

The event was aimed at residents of Bekkersdal from both the formal and informal settlements.

“We decided to do this event in order to bring the community of Bekkersdal together. We as the church are trying to play a proactive and positive role in the community. One way to do this is through sport and having fun,” reverent Rodger Lekoko of the church said.

The youth of Bekkersdal were treated to soccer on Isiqalo Primary School’s soccer turf. Big and small took to the field in an impressive display of skills that could give the national soccer team a run for their money.

For those not in favour of running on a field and kicking a ball, there was a trampoline where children jumped and giggled and posed in mid-air. That was not the only bouncy activity at the fun day as there was also a jumping castle.

Those too young to do strenuous physical activity took to slides and swings on the school’s jungle gym. In addition to this, children got the chance to race on bicycle go karts.

“Sport activities are the only thing that they [children] have to keep off the streets of Bekkersdal. We wanted to bring that to them with this event,” Molatlhegi Sethepo, a member of St Mary’s Anglican Church and organiser of the event said.
