Scrap collectors looting building

'Crime has increased in the area since these guys started breaking the building down.'

Scrap collectors have caused an outcry from business owners in Aureus particularly in Steyr Street.

A few concerned residents and business owners contacted the herald in connection with a factory that is currently being broken down by scrap collectors. The damage is so extensive that the building does not even have windows, frames and the latest they have stolen are zinc roofing.

The scrap collectors are also digging in the ground in hopes of finding copper cables that lay under the ground of the premises. A business owner in the area states the people have been looting for approximately four weeks.

“Crime has picked up since these guys have been here. They have stolen some of my steel work and my security company caught a man trying to break into our business,” a concerned Gideon du Plessis said.

“All business owners in the street are concerned about the matter and they fear that this will also happen to them as it did to me,” he explained.

The business owner of what seems to have been a factory in the past is no where to be found.

“As far as I know, the business owner is overseas,” du Plessis said.

Du Pessis stated further that he has contacted the Randfontein police on various occasion with no result.

The herald spoke to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police and she stated that something will be done about the matter. The specific request by the herald was that police go to the scene.
