Municipality hands out 1 500 toys

'We did this because we wanted to put a smile on the children's faces.'

The Randfontein Local Municipality together with the Motsepe Foundation have given less fortunate children in the Greater Randfontein area an early Christmas.

The municipality was approached by the Mostsepe Foundation as they wanted to give out 6 000 toys across the district. The other municipalities that were approached were that of Mogale City, Westonaria and Marafong. The 6 000 toys were divided by these four municipalities and distributed to needy children.

“Randfontein had approximately 1 500 toys to give out to needy children in the Greater Randfontein area,” said Lucky Chiya, spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor.

“The age groups that were targeted were three to 11 years,” Chiya stated.

The municipality contributed to the project by providing the venue, buses as well as food for the approximately 1 500 children.

“We did this because we wanted to put a smile on the children’s faces and we wanted to give them an early Christmas,” said Chiya.

The event was held at the Greenhills Stadium where children joyously ran around and played together. Free face painting was done at the event and nearly all the children were seen sporting a heart, Batman’s mask, or flowers on their faces.
