Big changes for the West Rand

Big changes lie ahead for R'fontein and W'aria as a result of the West Rand District Municipality's 2016/2025 vision and mission.

The West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) had a media networking session in order to strengthen the relationship between the two.

During the networking session various changes and improvements that’s in store for the West Rand were highlighted. On the top of the list is the 2016 vision of having one municipality, combining Randfontein and Westonaria.

Next is Randfontein becoming a uni-city or a metropolitan municipality by 2015.

The West Rand also has been challenged to become the greenest district in South Africa. For this, tree planting and recycling projects have been put into place. In addition the regional green IQ strategy was approved and the WRDM is setting out to attract green economy projects. The use of this green economy will be there to grow the GGP of the West Rand.

The WRDA is looking into building a united non-racial society through racially integrated housing projects. Training and skills development in the community in the form of more leaderships and internships also has been placed on the list.

Focus was placed on municipal services at the networking session. WRDM is looking into a back-to-basics strategy with regard to municipal services. This means basic municipal services will be focused on going forward. These basics are fixing potholes, improving cleanliness as well as preventing spillages and water pipe bursts to name a few.

The last important issue mentioned was to ensure effective and accountable councillors. This entails councillor training as well as a strict fraud and corruption policy that has been put in place.
