RCA ‘koeiloop’ and Fun Run a big hit

'This was a great turnout for our first event of its kind' — principal.

The Randfontein Christian Academy’s (RCA) first Fun Run of its kind had participants’ blood pumping this past weekend (Saturday, 29 November).

Young and old showed up to participate in the 5km event that kicked off and ended at the school grounds on Plot 85 in Elandsvlei. Not even the hot weather could slow runners or walkers down and it took only 23 minutes for the first runner, Thys De Beer, 66, to cross the finish line.

“Its my lovely young wife and all the little ones from the school that keeps me fit. It was a lovely run on a beautiful root and a pleasure to be part of,” Thys, joint owner of Heidi en Peter Pre-Primary School said.

Thys also finished the recent 94.7 Cycle Challenge and there seems to be no end to this veteran.

Lourens Kruge, 27, was the second to finish with a time of 25 minutes. Rochelle De Beer, 44, was the first woman runner to finish. The first RCA pupil to complete the race was Seth Laphan, 9, in a time of 30 minutes while the first girl was Hester Maré, also aged 9.

While everyone was busy with the fun run, T-Bone – a 6-month-old Bonsmara fowl – was given the task of choosing the winner of the “koeiloop”. A veldt was measured out in smaller plots and then people could buy the plot they thought T-Bone was most likely to do her business on first. The winner would only be announced as soon as the location of her business is measured and will then be contacted to fetch the prize of a sheep.

After the event the winners received gold medals while all the other participants received silver medals.

“This was a great turn out for our first event of its kind and we want to make it an annual event. We hope to make it a huge event in 2015. Thank you to all who joined us and to all the RCA staff and friends who made the day possible,” Retha Maree, principal of RCA said.
