Power cuts expected throughout Summer

The summer period is used for maintenance in preparation of the winter when the demand will be high — Eskom.

Residents can expect power cuts throughout the summer.

According to Sipho Neke, spokesperson for Eskom the power utility will be carrying out scheduled maintenance and that rotational load shedding will definitely happen.

During the last weekend of November maintenance was done at the Cahora Bassa Electricity Plant in Mozabique which exports a large amount of power to South Africa. The concern of electricity recipients is actually that the entire summer will be under this stress and will result in further power cuts.

“The summer period is used for maintenance in preparation of the winter when the demand will be high. Winter is actually the troublesome time,” Neke said.

“The pressure that people fear over the summer time actually comes from generators being out for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.”

As seen over the weekend of the 29th of November, this maintenance will lead to load shedding. What this means for the residents of Randfontein is that load shedding is a reality and preparation needs to be done for it.

When asked if the December period will be under strain, Neke stated that, “The demand for electricity actually drops over December as companies close and relieve some pressure off the system.”

There have been concerns not only from citizens of South Africa but also the people in high positions such as parliamentary leaders, some of which have stated that that “There is a serious crisis at Eskom,” this according to Kenneth Meshoe, ACDP leader.

This was seconded by Mmusi Maimane, DA parliamentary leader as well as by Albert Mncwango, Inkatha Freedom Part MP.
