Municipal workers demand pay

"We are sick and tired, we demand our money" — municipal worker.

Angry municipal workers gathered outside the Randfontein Local Municipality recently in a bid to resolve their payment woes.

The workers state that they have not been paid their overtime for three months.

“It is not a lot but it is still our money,” Blessing Lekoko-Datini, one of the angry municipal workers said.

“We are sick and tired of this. We demand our money. This is unacceptable,” Lekoko-Datini added.
Spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor, Lucky Chiya confirmed that they have not been paid for some time, however, this is not the case for all municipal workers. He said 70 per cent has been paid their overtime but the other 30 per cent submitted their overtime after the payroll cut-off date.

“It is not that we do not want to pay them, it is that they submitted late,” Chiya said.

He said, “The payment is particularly difficult during December, but the workers should receive their money by the first week in December.

“The municipality says the delay lies with the paperwork – there is a delay with the system. The workers said they will not work until they receive their pay,” said Prince Molete, a shop steward handling the case on behalf of the workers.

According to Chiya, “Management has met with the relevant people in order to resolve the issue.”
