Statistics for burglaries at schools shocking

"At least 110 schools in the province have been the target of burglars in 2014" — DA.

The year 2014 proved to have been devastating to Gauteng schools with regard to burglaries and robberies.

According to Solly Misimanga, MPL of the Democratic Alliance it was discovered that “at least 110 schools in the province have been the target of burglars in 2014.”

In addition, the Department of Education received 21 reports of pupils and teachers being robbed in and around schools since the beginning of the year.

Misimanga believed the plan against this disturbing trend is, “To have extra patrollers and the installation of CCTV monitoring high risk schools.

“Little appears to have been done in response to so many schools having been targeted over the course of one year.”

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson of the Randfontein Police confirmed that various schools in Randfontein were victims of burglaries, however, further details cannot be revealed.

Misimanga described these statistics provided by the Department of Education as “a disturbing crime trend”. He said Randfontein schools should take to heart the safety of their schools and pupils by setting up measures such as tighter security at schools as well as patrollers or teachers monitoring children walking to and from school.

“We will be following up with the Department of Education and community safety to ensure that these plans (patrollers and CCTV) are followed through and that we ensure a safer learning environment for our youth in 2015,” was the assurance Misimanga gave.
