ANC assesses R’fontein, W’aria municipalities

Randfontein Local Municipality are assessed to see whether they are doing their jobs.

Last week, the Randfontein Local Municipality was under assessment by the newly elected Regional Executive Committee of the ANC.

Randfontein was the first to be visited. The key positions looked at were the Executive Mayor, the Speaker and the Chief Whip.

The key issues that were looked at were service delivery, which Mzi Khumalo, Speaker for the Randfontein Local Municipality said was the core of the evaluation.

In addition, revenue was assessed as well as municipal grants and good governance. The Regional Executive Committee was not the only party evaluating and giving suggestions the municipality also stated what they thought needed to be done in the community as well as raising their concerns about funding.

There were two particularly interesting moves raised by the speaker; the Randfontein-Westonaria Local Municipal merger and turning the product thereof into a metropolitan municipality.

While the former is self-explanatory, the latter means that the goals for Randfontein is to turn it into a money, skills and education hub like Johannesburg. This would entail major changes for the communities of Randfontein and Westonaria.

The municipality would have to ensure that structures are put into place to develop skills in Randfontein as well as keeping them here to generate and maintain financial and human capital.

Political talk aside, the above means that the Randfontein Local Municipality as well as four other municipalities will be checked up on to see whether they are doing their jobs.

While the question on the community’s lips is “Are they doing their jobs?” the outcome of the evaluation is yet to be revealed.
