Police on the lookout for injured suspect

‘Gunmen gained entry by cutting electrical fence; wife used as human shield’ — police.

Police confirmed that a couple at Loumarina Plots were the victims of an attempted house robbery early on Thursday morning.

Randfontein Police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst said, “It is alleged that the woman of the house was letting the family dogs out, when she was surprised by a group of four unknown male suspects. They were armed and forced her back into the house. Her husband allegedly heard the noise and became suspicious.

“It is alleged that the 48-year-old husband then retrieved his firearm but was surprised when the suspects used his wife as a human shield. It is further alleged that the suspects then randomly opened fire on the couple. The husband sustained an injury to his hand as a result.

“It is alleged that the victim was able to discharge his firearm in the direction of the suspects, when his wife was out of harm’s way and it is believed that at least one of the suspects was wounded. A blood trail was found on the scene during investigation. The trail was followed but no positive result was achieved.

“The suspects fled the scene on foot. It is alleged that the suspects fled empty-handed, since nothing is missing from the house. During investigation it was found that the suspects gained entry to the premises by cutting the electrical fence. The dogs also were poisoned and one of them died due to the poisoning.”

It is possible that the injured suspect might seek medical attention, therefore Lt Col Kruger requested any person who might come into contact with a gunshot victim to contact him immediately.
