‘Police car not used as taxi’

Westonaria police denies allegations: 'Driver was busy with interviews'

Westonaria police denied on Wednesday that a clearly marked vehicle was used as a taxi but has launched an internal investigation to why officers were so rude to the man who reported the matter at the police station.

On Friday last week Johan Hattingh claims a clearly marked vehicle from the Westonaria Police Station was being used as a taxi.

According to a statement by Westonaria Station Commander Col. AM Nkhwafhu “It was in fact one of their vehicles involved in the witnessed incident. He said that the driver of the vehicle was a detective on duty and that he does not wear a uniform but he was accompanied by a female officer in uniform.

“This matter will not be taken lightly. We have spoken to the detective regarding what happened on Friday (14 November) and he has given us a testimony stating that he was busy with interviews regarding an ongoing case.

“We have also spoken to the officers on duty at the police station reception and they have told me that Hattingh was very rude to them and had no respect and that was why they behaved the way they did,” Col. Nkhwafhu said.

Col. Nkhwafhu added that there will be docket opened where the station will be doing an investigation of the disciplinary inquiry against all parties involved.

“We want the community to be able to come to us with any and all problems and it is the responsibility of the police to keep cool and level heads at all times. We will be internally enforcing professional conduct,” he concluded.
