Greenhills trees to affect 120 houses

'Project to foster a cleaner and greener environment in Randfontein' — council.

The green movement has hit Randfontein, specifically Greenhills Extension 3.

This initiative is brought to Greenhills-residents by the Randfontein Local Municipality. Manager of Parks and Waste for the municipality, Patricia Tshitema is spearheading the project.

According to ward councillor Peter Dick, who supplied the herald with the mapping and planning of the tree planting, it will affect around 120 houses in the area.

These trees will be planted in front of the homes in Union Street, Willem Street, Pierneef Road, Kathrine Road, Fritzkampe Road, Irma Stern Street and Sidney Carter Street.

Dick – an ardent environmentalist and self-proclaimed tree hugger – calls it “The greening of Greenhills” and said he is excited about the project.

The only thing Dick is concerned about is the nurturing of the trees. The maintenance of the trees are something simple; most importantly they require water, especially in the early stages.

He urges people in the area to look after the trees when they have been planted so that these trees can help foster a cleaner and greener environment in Randfontein. The trees also will add to the aesthetic of the neighbourhood as there will be trees on either side of the road for shady and slow drive on a Sunday afternoon.

It should, however, be noted that it is ultimately the responsibility of the council to maintain these trees as they are planted on council ground.

According to Lucky Chiya, spokesperson for the Randfontein Executive Mayor, “Success with regards to this strategy should be seen in the year 2014/ 2015.”
